My latest project on NY Cares was working on a community garden in upper west side. Inspite of a late night or rather an early morning party and with only four hours of sleep, I still felt the urge to goto the event because I realised that each event had a specific number of volunteers and if people cancel at the last minute, the project may not finish as per plan.
We had to assemble at 59th Street, Columbus Circle and move on from there with the team leader. It was cloudy but warm and hence pleasant. We reached the small and pretty garden of 300 tulips. It looked uneven and too dispersed. I guess thats the most that a bunch of inexperienced volunteers can do in a limited time.
There was a barren piece of land in front of us. We were given some garden tools and the project was to convert it into a kitchen garden. So we made some rows of soil by digging trenches, watered them and then each one of us was asked to pick seeds of our choice and plant them. In between a truck full of big concrete blocks arrived and we were asked to quit our present work and help carrying them.
We did some more of multch and srones spreading and watering. By then it was time for some hot dogs grilled right there. The garden had been started by a now87 year old man and his two daughters had now taken over the job. It was fun to be doing hard manual labour just for food. The heartiest meal ever. So simple yet relishing.
Some of the passer bys also walked in with curiosity and joined our work. One of them was happy to see work being done as his everyday morning walk consisted of rounds of this very park. They said that it would be a different place when all that we planted grows up in about a month. I shall definitely go back to see how they came up.
