Fifth Avenue on a Saturday evening

Glamour thy name is New York. The most fashionable, glamorous street in New York is ....no prizes for guessing this one... ofcourse the one and only Fifth Avenue. So I decided to take a walk along the Fifth Avenue starting from 61st street, the south east corner of central park down till 42nd times square. And saturday is the best day to do this as it has the maximum tourists (read as babes) and the ambience is festive and holidaylike. Infact if you are not spending a part of your saturday in Manhattan your weekend is meaningless.

The first building to catch an Indian eye is the hotel "The Pierre" which has the Indian flag floating over it. Its feels proud to see a Taj group hotel on Fifth Avenue. I hear some nice music near the fountain. On a closer look, there is a man playing his elecetric guitar on the steps near the huge fountain and people dancing/sitting on the cobbled floor/benches and swaying to the rhythm.... very romantic. On my left is the glittering white Apple showroom and I couldn't resist having a hands on experience on the i-phone. After playing with it for more than half an hour I moved ahead.

Just outside FAO Shwartz were two fountains and peole lazying around it. Its surprising that New York hardly ever gets over crowded may be on times square on new year's eve. But generally there are always more i-phones than people waiting to touch it, more benches that people to sit. Is NY any less populated than an Indian city...no way but it is well planned...every event, every place planned at a macro level keeping the demand in mind and the ultimate user. Unlike our country where self-indulgence in money and power takes precedence over everything else.

Moving ahead one by one all the big names of glamour world kept passing by. Bergdorf Goodman on both sides, the high end men's store; Tiffany & co. , for jewellery and silverware; Prada, Italian label from Milan famous for its bohemian style;Fendi, the Italian boutique; the Trump Tower. I was tempted to go in and have a coffee at the Starbucks, glistening italian marbles all around set with green plants and flowing waters. There was a mix of American and European stores. American like Abercombie&Fitch, GAP, Mexx, H&M, Nine West and European like Hugo Boss, Bottega Veneta, Gucci, Cartier, Laccoste, Versace. Fashion, style and glamour is definitely the prerogative of Europeans.

American fashion is more chic, sexy and fierce however European though subdued is more stylish, ultra luxurious, hand crafted and most importantly expensive. Not surprisingly all major sales occur mostly is American retail show rooms. European stores are gorgeous and deal in apparel and leather accessories and thier products are worth each penny so is the brand name. By then I was near Rockefeller Center and I relaxed watching the rink dining area and the waterfall. Continued the walk till Radio city hall and times square and took the subway back home, back to earth from heaven.
